22nd Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon 2008

This event has made its reputation as "The World''s Toughest Mountain Race". A true challenge to the spirit of human endurance, this race involves running up and down Mt. Kinabalu (4095.2 m), where the total distance is 21km for all men, women and men categories. The average climber takes 2 days to climb the mountain but participants of the race can make it in less than 3 hours.

The Climbathon is part of the Buff® Sky Runners® World Series circuit for the sixth consecutive year and is one of the two races in the circuit held outside Europe. Buff® Sky Runner® World Series is regulated and coordinated by the European-based Federation for Sport at Altitude (FSA).

City Mosque Kota Kinabalu

It was Built on a 2.47 acres site at the Likas bay, the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is exemplary of the Islamic contemporary architecture.The great view located near the sea, this majestic white mosque boasts similar features to the Nabawi Mosque in Medina. This floating mosque has a prayer hall which houses three madrasahs and accommodates from 9, 000 to 12, 000 people at a time.

By far the largest mosque in Kota Kinabalu, the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is even possibly the most beautiful one in Malaysia – the man-made lagoon which surrounds it gives a serenely gorgeous and dramatic look to the mosque on a full moon night.




The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is open for public visits daily except Fridays from 8am to 5pm. There are no fees charged on visitors.

The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is located about 3 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu City (10 - 15 minutes drive away).

Atkinson Clock Tower Kota Kinabalu

One of the most enduring landmarks in Kota Kinabalu, it stands prominently on a bluff along Signal Hill Road adjacent to the old Police Station. Built in 1903, this all-wood, no-nails structure was built in memory of Francis George Atkinson - the popular first District Officer of Jesselton during the British North Borneo Chartered Company Administration, who had succumbed to a tropical disease at the young age of 28.




This Clock Tower has the distinction of being the oldest standing structure in the whole of Sabah that survived the destruction of Jesselton town during World War II. Till today, it still serves to keep the city's time.



The Atkinson Clock Tower is managed by the Sabah Museum under its Antiquity and History section.

Earlier called Bond Street, Gaya Street situated in the Kota Kinabalu Central Business District has been the centre of business sector since over a hundred years. The wooden shops with nipah roofs are long lost but here is where generations-old family businesses is still thriving authorised down from father to son.

Every Sunday morning time, the distance of Gaya Street is closed down away to traffic to make way for the Fair. Shop at for any price under shady trees and outsized umbrellas, like batik sarongs, fruits and flowers, artistic production* and craft, footwear, antiques and souvenirs, cakes, even pets and herbs!. This makes up the best place to go through the cross-section of the local population once whole families enjoy a Sunday outing.

23rd Sabah Dragon Boat Race 2008

A traditional Chinese festival that evolved from myths and legend, that has grown into one of the main highlights of the year. This exciting race has attracted many teams from as far as Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, China and Brunei.

The thugs of drums and the roar of oarsmen unite with sounds of the waves as Dragon Boats steadily, yet surely and as quickly make their way across the River Milo. The men search desperately for the body of one whose love and loyalty for his country is the symbol of true patriotism. Maidens throw dumpling after dumpling into the river in the hope that the fishes will not find Qu Yuan, their beloved poet and countryman. To stand spectator to this scene, one is certain to feel their grief and pain and yet, will also feel strength in the voices of the men and the power of their united spirit.

Held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, the first Dragon Boat Races, the Chinese today celebrate the Duanwu Festival not only to remember Qu Yuan, but also to continue the tradition to honour "the spirit of the dragon" which is the spirit of uniting and working together as a team for one common purpose.

This year Kota Kinabalu will host the 23rd Sabah Dragon Boat Race along the shores of the Likas Bay. Initiated by the Sabah Chinese Cultural Association 19 years ago, the Race was placed under the responsibility of the Sabah Tourism Board in 1996. The race was then briefly under the organised by the Ministry of Youth & Sports in the years 2002 and 2003 but is now (since 2004) back in the hands of Sabah Tourism.

During the Race competing teams drive their boats forward rowing to the rhythm of pounding drums. The multicoloured boats are decorated with ferocious-looking dragon heads, scaly bodies and elaborate tails that rise out of the sea. The winners of the race are crowned king for the year which is a great honour among the Chinese in Sabah.

Spectators are not only able to watch an exciting series of races but there are plenty of delicious local fare to be sampled at the stalls set up along Likas Bay. Look out for one of the most popular Dragon Boat Festival delicacy, rice dumplings called tzung tzi or chung tze which were originally eaten in memory of Qu Yuan, but has since gradually evolved into a snack for all occasions.
